NWC CONSTRUCTION COMPLETES NO-COST HOME FOR SEVERELY DISABLED VETERAN
Luis Puertas will receive key to his new home at Key Ceremony this Saturday, December 17, at 11:00 a.m.

Orlando, FL (December 13, 2011) - US Army Specialist Luis Puertas will get a very special Christmas gift when NWC Construction and Homes for Our Troops hand over the key to his beautiful new home this Saturday, December 17, at 11:00 a.m. It took just three months to complete the 3,076 sq. ft. specially adapted, green home for Puertas, who lost both of his legs following an Explosively Formed Penetrator (EFP) explosion in Baghdad, Iraq, on September 20, 2006.

Following the explosion that left him a double amputee, SPC Puertas spent the next 14 months enduring surgeries and rehabilitation at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Since then, Puertas has been renting a house that is not wheelchair accessible and is unequipped with any rails or ramps, making daily tasks like preparing meals or going in and out of the bathroom extremely difficult. (Puertas bio available here: www.homesforourtroops.org/puertas.) His new home will allow him maximum freedom of movement and the ability to live more independently.

When the non-profit organization Homes for Our Troops reached out to Orlando area home builders, NWC Construction answered the call and agreed to donate 100% of its construction services for the Puertas home.

“Specialist Puertas is a brave and deserving young warrior and the sacrifices he has made to protect our freedom are insurmountable. It was an honor and a priviledge to contribute my services to Homes for Our Troops and help give Luis a comfortable place where he can live and move more freely,” said NWC president Nathan Cross. "Our team worked hard and we are all thrilled that Luis will be spending the holidays in his new home."

The home, located on Robert’s Island Road in Orlando, was designed to suit SPC Puertas' specific needs and was built according to VA regulations and guidelines. It also received Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC) Platinum Level certification, the highest certification offered by the organization. Its many features maximize indoor air quality, water conservation and energy efficiency and with an HERS score of 54, it will only cost an average of $87.50 per month to power the 3,000-plus sq. ft. home (2,131 under air). In addition to NWC’s generous contribution, the majority of the home was constructed from materials and labor donated members of the homebuilding industry and community volunteers.

Join NWC Construction, Homes for Our Troops and SPC Puertas for the Key Ceremony this Saturday, December 17, 2011 at the homesite - 12841 Roberts Island Road, Orlando, FL. Puertas and his family will arrive by official Police Motorcade Escort and the ceremony will begin promptly at 11:00 a.m.

SPC Luis Puertas, Nathan Cross of NWC Construction and John Gonsalves with Homes for Our Troops will be available for media interviews immediately following the ceremony.
